Summer Workshop Series for Teachers, Parents and After School Care Providers

Participate in Science and Math workshops that are inquiry and research based and designed to promote student success! Activities are correlated to State and National Science Standards and explore curriculum connections across the disciplines. Come and explore strategies to help children succeed! Expand your knowledge of what children must know and be able to do!

GEMS Summer Workshops for Teachers, Parents and Community Educators, Grades Pre K-8

TeachersJoin us this Summer at the California Science Center for a workshop series that gives you the opportunity to experience GEMS (Great Explorations in Math and Science) units while exploring the resources and exhibits at the California Science Center! Engage in hands-on, inquiry based activities that are research based and correlated to State and National Science Standards! Receive “behind the scenes” insights to the exhibits at the California Science Center! Participants will receive teacher guides and materials for each workshop enrolled, and receive a certificate of attendance! LAUSD teachers may earn 1 salary point if the entire series is taken!

Workshop Hours: 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Registration Fee: $40 per workshop
Enroll for the entire series and save 15% off the total registration cost!

Course # PT 43:
Tree Homes

July 13, 2010

Come to a workshop that encourages appreciation for trees and for the animals that live in tree homes. The workshop is designed to stimulate children's interest in the world around them and in the biological need for warmth and shelter. It introduces different parenting and nesting strategies, and compares the characteristics and behaviors of various tree-home animals. Math concepts of sorting/classifying and measurement are emphasized throughout. As part of this workshop, participants will visit the Exploring Trees, Inside and Out exhibit at the California Science Center!

Course # PT 44:
Investigating Artifacts

July 15, 2010

This workshop will present participants with activities related to anthropology, archaeology, and diverse world cultures. Lesson activities will have you immediately involved, hands-and-minds-on, as you sort and classify material objects found on a walk, then make masks from those materials. In addition, participants will be introduced to archaeology and anthropology as they go on an “excavation” and uncover and explain clues from artifacts found from the past. As part of this workshop, participants will visit the Lost Egypt: Ancient Secrets, Modern Science exhibit at the California Science Center!

Terrarium Habitats

July 20, 2010

Construct terrariums for the classroom! Create micro-environments that unfold and change over time! Learn about concise and interesting biological information on a number of possible small organisms (sow bugs, isopods, earthworms, snails...) that can become terrarium inhabitants. Discover the essential elements all habitats must have for living things to survive! As a part of this workshop, participants will visit the Desert Zone in the new Ecosystems exhibit at the California Science Center!

Aquatic Habitats

Plants, snails, fish, and other organisms will be investigated while concepts such as life cycles and food webs take on real am memorable meaning. As part of this workshop, participants will visit the Kelp Forest Zone in the new Ecosystems exhibit at the California Science Center!

On Sandy Shores

Dive into the hidden world beneath our feet in this marine science workshop on the ecosystem we call the beach! Explore and deepen your understanding of the concept of sandy shore while teaching students to foster respect for the environment and all living things. As part of this workshop, participants will visit the Rocky Shore zone in the new Ecosystems exhibit at the California Science Center!

Schoolyard Ecology

A professional development workshop opportunity for Elementary Teachers in Grades PK-5

Dates: August 2-6 2010
Time: 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. daily
Where: Wallis Annenberg Building for Science Learning and Innovation, California Science Center
Registration Fee: $150.00

• Hear keynote speakers who will motivate and inspire you!
• Enrich your science teaching experience and your science curriculum!

Kresa Educator Resource Hall
Throughout the year the Kresa Educator Resource Hall will host "Make and Take Saturdays" where visitors can try out a variety of engaging hands-on science and mathematic activities relating to different themes. Join us to meet and network with other educators and parents in the Southern Californian community.
