California State Science Fair
The 57th Annual California State Science Fair takes place on May 19-20, 2008.

Each year, over 900 middle and high school students compete in the California State Science Fair, a two-day event hosted by the California Science Center that recognizes the state's best student research projects.

To compete, middle and high school students must place first, second or third in their category at an affiliated county or regional science fair. The projects span 20 categories—from aerodynamics and hydrodynamics to zoology—and are judged by a volunteer pool of over 300 scientists and engineers from private industry and higher education. In addition to the winners in each category, top honors go to Student of the Year (senior only), and Project of the Year (in both junior and senior high divisions). Science teachers, nominated by middle and high school students, also compete for Science Teacher of the Year in the junior and senior divisions.

Approximately $50,000 in cash prizes are awarded at the California State Science Fair each year, plus additional awards and scholarships funded by private organizations and corporations. The honors include the top four winners in each category and division, as well as the project, student and teacher of the year, and special recognition awards.
