GEMS Summer Science and Math Academy
Great Explorations in Math and Science

This workshop for teachers of K-8th grades, will provide hands-on experiences with inquiry-based GEMS Science and Math units that are aligned with the California State Science Standards and the National Science Standards.
Workshop participants will experience science and Math activities as their students would, incorporating additional information about classroom management techniques and tips for teaching an activity-based curriculum.
Throughout the workshop, extensions will be given linking other areas of the curriculum including literature and language arts, social studies and art. In addition, teachers will receive GEMS guides for every session taken, and tour the GEMS Center at the California Science Center.
GEMS Guides highlighted in this academy include, but are not limited to the following:
Ant Homes Under the Ground (K-1); Ladybugs (K-1); Liquid Explorations (1-2); Frog Math (K-2); States of Matter (1-3); Math on the Menu (3-5); In All Probability (3-6); Stories in Stone (4-8); Chemical Reactions (5-8); Paper Towel Testing (5-8); and Terrarium Habitats (K-6).

Participate in workshops that will help build conceptual understanding, and provide engaging enrichment with hands-on activities that will supplement your math and science programs.
This workshop is for teachers in grades K-6, and will provide teachers with activities that are inquiry based and show the connection between Math and Science. Participants will receive AIMS Guides for every strand taken.
Workshop strands include, but are not limited to the following:
Critters (K-2); Out of This World (3-6); Primarily Earth (K-3); Cycles of Knowing and Growing (1-3); and Weather Sense (4-6).

Podcasts and PowerPoint and Webquests…Oh My! Connecting Curriculum and Technology in the Science Classroom

Students learn science and math by conducting their own investigations in order to develop their understanding. During this course, participants will explore a variety of teacher-friendly technologies, strategies, and learner-centered activities that will: (1) engage students as they learn math and science concepts and (2) develop higher-order thinking skills in students through the use of technology-related investigations. You’ll leave this workshop with materials, lesson plans and ideas designed to improve students’ understanding of the Math and Science standards.

2008 Summer Inquiry Institutes
• What is scientific inquiry?
• What are the differences and similarities between abilities necessary to do scientific inquiry and understandings about scientific inquiry as listed in the National Science Education Standards?
• Can students really learn essential science content through inquiry?
• How can I teach using inquiry-based teaching strategies?
Workshop Description:
Are you interested in making your science classroom more student-centered by focusing on inquiry-based experiences? Inquiry is a powerful way of learning and teaching. Immerse yourself in a week long seminar that will take you through an inquiry experience based on the powerful 5 E instructional model.
Participants will receive materials to use in their classrooms, hear exciting keynote speakers and learn about the resources available to them at the California Science Center.
