America I AM celebrates nearly 500 years of African American contributions to our country and the world. Through artifacts, multimedia, and programs visitors explore the influence and innovations of African Americans.
Visitors can walk past the ‘Door of No Return’; view personal artifacts and innovations of African American artists, activists and inventors; and investigate key moments in the evolution of the nation to open dialogue about our collective experience and future.

America I AM along with related exhibitions, programs, and films being offered at partner institutions, fosters a greater understanding of the African American imprint and recognizes our shared human experience.

These educational programs will be presented at the California Science Center, in association with the California African American Museum.

Marvelous Merpeople

Since the 18th century, Mami and Papi Wata's following has grown in
Africa, as well as in the Caribbean and parts of South America;
participants will create a merperson doll with cotton fabrics, paper and
natural fibers, and use small organic decorative elements to enhance
them.
Soul Food Resilience & Reinvention

Celebrating a tradition of survival and resilience, this lecture and food demonstration by Dr. Desmonette Hazly makes evident how African Americans took food stuffs often discarded by the "Big House's" kitchen and reinterpreted them, creating a culturally specific cuisine.
