Think about what you throw away on Earth Day and every day.

It’s hard to miss the “Paper Person” in the L.A. Zone of the Ecosystems exhibit. Stretching 48 feet across the gallery, the sculpture is made up of all the paper trash that guests threw away at the California Science Center on Earth Day 2009. To make the sculpture, artist Kim Abeles washed and ironed the trash and made it into sheets. Then she glued the paper onto felt backing and covered it with protective sheeting, called glassine.

If we all recycle more and change simple things, such as how we pack our lunches, just think how much garbage we can keep out of landfills not just on Earth Day, but every day!
