Frequently Asked Questions

Q.  How can I enroll my children in the Science Center School?
A.  The Los Angeles Unified School District will establish enrollment and attendance boundaries around the Science Center School just as with any other elementary school. To date, these boundaries have not been established.

Q.  How will the Science Center School be different from other elementary schools?
A.
  • The Science Center School will offer students an enriched curriculum with an emphasis in the subjects of math and science. The new school will focus on providing instruction in math and science to students at their youngest stages of learning--in an effort to instill a lifelong love for learning. The California Science Center will work with LAUSD and other participants to develop an enriched and unique curriculum where discovery, inquiry and the presentation of student scientific projects will be fostered. The curriculum will emphasize science, mathematics, use of technology and integrate these topics with other areas of instruction like language arts, social studies, fine arts and physical education.
  •
    Q.  I am a teacher. How can I get information about teaching at the Science Center School?
    A.  The process for recruiting and hiring teachers and staff is being developed as part of the charter-writing process. This process will follow a national search for the principal. The Science Center School will be seeking energetic, innovative teachers with experience integrating science, math and technology across the curriculum. LAUSD Human Resources Department will handle all employment issues.

    Q.  I am an educator. What does the opening of the new Amgen Center for Science Learning facility mean to me?
    A.  With the opening of the new Amgen Center for Science Learning facility, the California Science Center will be able to significantly increase professional development opportunities for teachers. The facility also provides model environments for inquiry and exploration. A new professional development library will be a science education resource for the entire community--teachers, scientists, and parents looking for tools to increase science learning. The large open-air Science Garden will become a signature feature of the new facility, offering inquiry based science interactive experiences for teachers, students and community families. Finally, the Amgen Center for Science Learning will continue to offer teachers the quality programming it currently offers inside and outside the Science Center including ThinkScience Pathways for school groups, the Science of Scientists Seminar Series, Science Theater on Tour and Educator Open House.

    Q.  I am a parent. How can I benefit from the Amgen Center for Science Learning?
    A.  The Amgen Center for Science Learning continues its tradition of providing significant science experiences and resources for parents, children and other informal science educators including programs such as the public demonstrations that make up Spectacular Weekends, Hands-On Science Camp, Curator Kids Club and Camp-Ins.

    Q.  How will the Amgen Center for Science Learning help the community?
    A.  The Amgen Center for Science Learning’s Community Outreach Programs, Curator Kids Club and Learn 2 Earn, serve the youth of our community and expose participants to a wide range of science experiences while learning about the operation of the California Science Center. The Amgen Center for Science Learning will soon occupy a new facility located in Exposition Park at the site of the historic Armory Building and will be characterized by its customized spaces and resources designed specifically to promote science teaching and learning for all. It will:
