Science Matters: The Medicalization of Race

November 21, 2009 from 1:00-2:30 pm

Broadcaster Tavis Smiley will moderate a panel discussion on The Medicalization of Race November 21, 2009 from 1:00-2:30 pm. The program is part of Science Matters, a Science Center panel program series that explores current science issues in the forefront of public concern. It is free to the public.

How valid is the concept of race from a biological standpoint? Should race matter or should medicine be colorblind? How much should doctors and researchers place on the role of race in health issues? Scientists will explore these issues and offer different viewpoints on the science and policy of racial categorization in medical research and disease treatment. Guests at the Science Matters program also have an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the topic by visiting related exhibits and films at the Science Center, California African American Museum (CAAM) and Skirball Cultural Center.

RACE: Are We So Different?—

October 3 – December 31, 2009

RACE: Are We So Different? encourages guests to examine the science, history and everyday impact of race. In the area of science, visitors discover that human beings are more alike than any other living species, and no one gene or set of genes can support the idea of race. In the section on history, the exhibit shows that throughout American history, economic interests, popular culture, science, politics and the struggle for power have played a role in shaping our understanding of race. In the everyday impact section, guests find that though race may not be a biological concept, it certainly is real both socially and culturally.

A project of American Anthropological Association in collaboration with the Science Museum of Minnesota, Race promotes discovery, discussion and reflection through a powerful and interactive combination of artifacts, historic and contemporary photography, multimedia components and interactive activities.
