Science Center School and Amgen Center for Science Learning

Background:

Through a unique partnership between the California Science Center and the Los Angeles Unified School District, the Science Center School will instill in children a lifelong love of learning. The School will serve kindergarten through grade five, and attract most of its students from the neighborhood surrounding Exposition Park. It will not be a magnet school, but will focus on math and science and integrate language arts, social studies and fine arts in the curriculum. The California Science Center will assist in the development of science and math curriculum while Los Angeles Unified School District will administer the school as a dependent charter school.

The Amgen Center for Science Learning will develop the community and public programs of the California Science Center. Through relationships with universities, school districts and informal education institutions, the Amgen Center for Science Learning will provide quality science learning experiences to parents, children, teachers, scientists and other educators. The Center will reflect a thematic approach to science education, hosting teacher training, hands-on children's workshops, parent/child classes and community programs. Distance learning technology will enable the Center to reach beyond its walls to serve regional and national audiences.

Both the Science Center School and Amgen Center for Science Learning are the result of a master plan that calls for an integrated approach to science learning - one that includes a world-class science center, a neighborhood elementary school and an education resource center, all at one location - the California Science Center.

Location and features:

The historic brick Armory building will be restored and renovated to hold part of the school and all of the Center for Science Learning. A new building constructed adjacent to the Armory will house the remaining portion of the school.

Features of the Science Center School will include:

  • Twenty-eight (28) classrooms
  • Six (6) common rooms, with spaces and equipment for group projects within a classroom or between classrooms. Four classrooms will connect to each common room. Students will learn to develop and test ideas for exhibit design as they create their own exhibits, some of which will be displayed in the Science Center.
  • Multi-purpose room to function as a cafeteria and auditorium
  • Office spaces

Features of the Amgen Center for Science Learning will include:

  • Ten (10) thematically designed classrooms and two (2) laboratory spaces.
Classrooms will have multiple uses including teacher training, hands-on workshops for children, parent/child classes and community programs.
  • Professional development library for teachers and other educators with state-of-the-art instructional tools.
  • Video production studio along with a multi-media computer laboratory. Distance learning programming will serve regional, state and national audiences.
  • Science Garden, a sheltered space with exhibits that provide students opportunities for making observations, collecting data, and performing experiments.

Funding: $24.3-million for the Science Center School and $27.7-million for the Amgen Center for Science Learning.

Architects:

Morphosis, Santa Monica, California.

Schedule for completion: Armory Building renovation and new construction will be completed in 2004.
