can imagine being an astronaut tucked inside a
small space capsule, watch performers that make
flight come alive, or put on 3D glasses and “blastoff” to
the moon at this year’s Festival
of Flight, October 22-23, 2005 from 10
am to 5 pm at the California Science Center! The
inspirational theme of flight will be celebrated
through a wide variety of activities that offer
something for everyone in the family. The
Festival of Flight is made possible through the
generous support of Northrop Grumman. Admission
to the festival is free.Staged in and around the
Science Center’s main building and
in the Air and Space Gallery, visitors can:
- Learn about the
latest exhibit – the Apollo Command Module—and
its role in the Apollo-Soyuz Test program. The addition makes
the Science Center the only location west
of the Mississippi to house flown space capsules
from Apollo, Gemini and Mercury missions.
- Enjoy performances
that interpret flight from artists such as Danza Azteca Cuauhtemoc,
Collage Dance Theatre, The Korean Classical
Music and Dance Ensemble, Donna Sternberg & Dancers, Arpana Dance Company,
The Eagle Spirit Dancers, D. Hunter White & Company and storyteller
Michael McCarty
- Look to the skies for the Red Bull Air Force Skydiving Team, an
elite group of extreme athletes who will be landing right in front
of the Science Center, as well as vintage aircraft flyovers, and
hot air balloon demonstrations
- Explore science both indoors and outside through fun, hands-on
activities led by Science Center staff
- Discover flight as seen through the eyes of students from the Dr.
Theodore T. Alexander, Jr. Science Center School whose artwork will
be on display in the Air and Space Gallery
In addition, the IMAX Theater will have hourly showings of the new
film, Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon 3D,
narrated and produced by Tom Hanks. The film
depicts the 12 extraordinary astronauts who walked
on the moon and their incredible journey to the
lunar surface.
Admission to the festival, exhibits and performances is free; tickets
to IMAX films vary from $4.75 to $8.00, and
there is a nominal fee for select attractions. For
