Before the screening, join us for a hands-on sound activity.

Science Matters

The Medicalization of Race
Saturday, November 21, 2009, 1 to 2:30 p.m.
Loker Conference Center, 1st Floor

The Human Genome Project shows that 99.9 percent of the human genome is the same in everyone regardless of race. Based on this, many scientists argue that ‘race’ has no biological meaning and is used to perpetuate harmful social inequities. Others contend that racial groups can genetically differ from one another and that the differences can have medical importance.

Panelists will debate the practical costs and benefits of racial categorization in medical research and disease treatment and discuss the socio-cultural and public policy implications associated with differing point of views. The discussion will be moderated by noted author, journalist, political commentator and talk show host Tavis Smiley.

Your Membercard and advance registration grants you special reserved seating. Click here for additional program information and to make your reservations.
