JUNE

Science MattersScience Matters
Fracking

Saturday, June 8, 2013, 1 to 2:30 p.m.
Loker Conference Center, 1st Floor

Science Matters is a free public adult education series where we explore critical and controversial science issues at the forefront of public concern.

Hydraulic fracturing or “fracking” has been used as an effective technique for tapping gas or oil reserves from rock layers deep within the earth. However, this activity involves the injection of massive amounts of water mixed with chemicals that may result in groundwater contamination. Do the health and environmental costs of “fracking” outweigh its benefits? Should the practice be regulated by the State or should the oil industry be allowed to self-regulate?

A panel of renowned experts representing differing viewpoints will present and discuss the subject from diverse perspectives and respond to questions from the audience. Award-winning NBC4 political reporter Conan Nolan will moderate the discussion. For further information,
