Throughout
her career, Dr Yancey has focused on various aspects of chronic
disease prevention and adolescent health promotion. Her work
addresses health disparities in underserved and understudied
communities that are at increased risk for obesity—and inactivity—related
chronic diseases, mostly by designing and implementing practical
intervention approaches to influence the behavior of “captive
audiences” in
workplace, school, religious and health care settings. She
has served five years in public health practice, most recently
as Director of Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion,
Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. Dr.
Yancey is a Fellow of the American College of Preventive
Medicine and a public health commentator for local NPR affiliate,
KPCC. She has authored more than 100 scientific publications,
including briefs, book chapters, videos, and among those,
more than 70 peer-reviewed journal articles and editorials.
Her work includes serving on the federal Physical Activity
Guidelines Committee, the Public Health Advisory Committee
for the State of California, the Institute of Medicine (IOM)
Standing Committee on Childhood Obesity Prevention, and the
Board of Directors of the Public Health Institute, which
she currently chairs.
